About Tapestry Ministries, Inc.
In 2000, Tapestry Ministries was initially started by Founder and President, Ms. Johnrice Harris Newton, her daughter Johnice Woods, Min. Charlane Russell, and Rev. Donald Parish, Jr. as a forum for at risk teens in the inner city of Dallas, Texas to address risky life-style behaviors and academic needs. This later became the YES (Youth Expecting Success) Program that provides SAT preparation, reading and math improvement, life skills classes, college tours, and college readiness resources. With the help of many community organizations and supporters, The Rainwater Foundation, and faithful board members (Johnice Woods, Charlane Russell, Crystal Johnson, Tonya Hill, Jessica Harris, Gina Woodard, Seun Akinwunmi; former board members- Sophia Johnson, Rozlyn Goodall, Lisa Yarbough, and Monica Parish), Tapestry has grown and developed into an organization that serves and supports over 30 first generation college attendee teens that have completed college and advanced degrees, and 30+ youth that are currently in colleges throughout the country.
The addition of the Tapestry Women’s Ministry has expanded the ministry to provide supportive services, conferences, and counseling referrals to women survivors and victims of domestic abuse. Ms. Newton’s book, Healing Voices, released in 2016, is a collection of women’s stories that have been affected by domestic abuse who realize their survival was because of their faith in God. The book is primary ministry outreach effort for the Tapestry Women’s ministry.
